What is a hydraulic actuator?

A hydraulic actuator operates in a similar method to pneumatic actuation, using a pressurised incompressible liquid instead of air to move the piston.

In comparison to pneumatic actuators, a hydraulic actuator of the same size is usually more powerful (up to 25 times greater) depending on the application. Hydraulic actuators can hold constant force and torque without the pump supplying more fluid and pressure. They are more suited to high force surface and subsea applications.
